How the U.S. Housing Market Was Rocked by COVID-19—and Where We Go From Here

By Elena Cox
Mar 22, 2021

As home buyers already know full well, the residential real estate market has been on a wild tear for the past few years—and the pandemic has pushed things to new, uncharted extremes. Buyers who had been cooped up indoors for months rushed into the market seeking larger homes in suburban and even remote locations. They were spurred on by record-low mortgage interest rates. And what have those masses of would-be buyers found? A fiercely competitive housing market marked by soaring prices and not nearly enough homes to go around.

Top 10 Economic Benefits of Converting to Solar Energy

Top 10 Economic Benefits of Converting to Solar Energy

Everything we do has an economic impact. The cars we drive, the houses we buy, the jobs we take, the food we eat, the clothes we purchase, the places we visit… every decision we make about the goods and services we buy, sell or produce has a societal health and economic impact on every community throughout the planet.

Going solar is a decision that has enormous impact in today’s world of climate change and the unpredictability of rising energy costs. We’re glad you’re here. We gathered the top ten economic benefits to consider when you choose rooftop solar.

Solar Saves on Energy Costs

  1. We all want lower utility bills.

Check the utility rates in your location. Chances are your utility bill is higher than you want it to be. You find yourself constantly reminding your family to turn off the lights, stop doing so much laundry and don’t run the dishwasher unless it’s packed full. All noble efforts, to be sure, but often hard to accomplish. Heaven forbid if you have a heatwave. The stress of the inevitable increase in your utility bill makes you wonder if turning on the air conditioner is worth it.

When you choose to install solar panels, or get solar panels + plus solar battery storage, you can bring the total cost down to a manageable level (averaged over the course of a year). Homeowners with high electricity rates from their local utilities are the ones who save the most when they convert to power from the sun. But you’d be surprised that most solar rooftop systems can save every homeowner thousands of dollars over the life of the product – which is two decades at the minimum (and probably more).

  1. No more Time-of-Use rates (TOU).

For states with TOU rates, going solar with a battery backup allows you to run your appliances when you want to, and not when the utility companies dictate you should. TOU rates are charged during peak hours – after work and during dinner – which means you’ll have a higher utility bill. It’s utility surge pricing. If you can use energy in the morning or during the day, you’ll probably pay less.

But let’s face it. We need to power up our homes when it’s convenient for us. We can’t do chores at work. With solar+ battery storage you are in control. Excess energy is stored in your battery. Use it when you need it the most!

  1. If it’s available – Net Metering is your friend.

If you’ve started to research the benefits of going solar, you have probably come across the term Net Metering. Net Metering is a practice in which your utility credits you for the excess electricity generated by your solar panels. It’s that simple. There are different net metering plans across the country. Each state is different. Some utility companies are hesitant to adopt net metering, so benefits may vary, but it is well worth your time to check into it. A professional solar company can walk you through the details.

  1. There are solar Federal and State Incentives for going solar.

If you haven’t discovered these tax deductions and credits yet, you’ll be pleased to know that you can deduct 30% of the cost of your purchased home solar system from your federal income taxes (your personal income tax credit).

And there are many state and local governments that offer property and sales tax exemptions. Don’t forget to ask about cash rebates! These rebates help you reduce your costs even more, in some cases by as much as 10 to 20%.

  1. Own your solar system? Your home value goes up.

The research is in. A primary solar driver is an increase in the value of your home, making it a safe and wise investment. The right size installation can net you a possible $20k increase in home value, or more, if you plan to sell. When residential home owners began buying solar roughly a decade ago, there were no reports or analyses to consider for the financial gains. Now? You’ve got several to choose from. Again, the research is in and its says that solar is a good investment.

Solar Saves Lives

  1. Renewable energy helps others in times of need.

We need energy to live our daily lives, but we also need energy to help others in time of desperate need. Solar saves lives. People all over the world are using solar energy to push through power outages caused by severe weather storms that often result in unnecessary fatalities. Fatalities that can be avoided with renewable energy.

Climate change has caused devastation around the world. Flooding, wildfires, severe hurricanes, rising sea levels, hunger from environmental destruction… the list is growing. And the costs associated with climate change is growing, too: rising health care costs, destruction of property, increased food prices and more. The adoption of solar and other alternative energies must continue to be adopted on a wide scale so we can address the negative societal and economic impacts of dirty fossil fuels on our planet, and on our lives.

  1. Clean air saves lives.

We need clean air to live our daily lives, so why not clean energy? Solar energy creates a planet that is clean and green. When you live in a healthy environment, you’re bound to be… well… healthier. The Environmental Defense Fund states that pollution is responsible for the deaths of 6.4 million people per year. Let’s say that again: 6.4 million people die from dirty air across our planet every year.

Smoggy air contains ozone which is a colorless, unstable gas. There is, however, a good ozone and a bad ozone. The good ozone starts about six miles above our heads and protects the earth from the sun’s harshest rays.

Needless to say, bad ozone kills. It comes from cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries and chemical plants – to name a few – and hangs around close to the ground in the air we breathe. Pollution is so bad in some parts of the world that people are instructed to stay indoors to limit the negative effects. And this is not uncommon. It’s not only harmful to human beings, but also crops, trees and other vegetation.

When we eliminate harmful toxic emissions caused by burning fossil fuels, people breathe better air, lead better lives and protect the planet for future generations.

  1. Solar creates American jobs, and supports families.

When your community is gainfully employed, it stands to reason that everybody benefits. The solar workforce saw an increase of 168% in roughly the past seven years. In 2010 the industry hired 93,000 people. Fast forward to last year and the number of jobs rise to 250,000. And it’s expected to continue to grow. The best thing? These solar jobs cannot be outsourced. They are here, in America, and a significant contributor to our economy.

Solar Saves on Gas & Fuel

  1. The price of sunlight is zero.

The sun is not sending us a bill to charge our houses with its power. And sunlight is never going away, unlike limited fossil fuels. You can really count on renewable energy each and every day.

Coal and natural gas are not free, and they are expensive and volatile. You never know when these dirty fossil fuels – which are not sustainable – are going up in price (utility prices have increased systematically over the past decade). There is no fuel cost with sunlight. You will know how much your energy prices will be for 20 years, at minimum. HomeLink Pros residential solar system options provide energy at the same, current utility rate every year for two decades.

  1. Solar reduces dangerous greenhouse gases from cars.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported not long ago that new motor vehicles contribute to extremely large levels of dangerous greenhouse gases that – as we speak – are endangering our public health and welfare.

What does solar energy have to do with cars? A lot. An electric vehicle can be powered up by your residential solar rooftop. You can use power from the sun to run your house and charge your car. Every single person who goes solar-plus-EV contributes enormously to the health of our communities and the health of our planet… and saves money on expensive, dirty fuel.

What is the Cost of a Home Solar Panel System?

Given these ten value points, you’re probably wondering about costs. How much is a solar system?

Santa Clarita Solar Company Offers Cheaper Electricity With No Extra Payments

Posted by:  KHTS Newsroom  in  Santa Clarita Latest NewsSCV Your Home Inside And Out June 6, 2019 – 9:30 am  21 Views

A Santa Clarita solar company is debunking the commonly-believed myth that homeowners have to make extra payments for the solar panels themselves in order to get cheaper, cleaner electricity.

“I think people get confused (and)  they think that solar means that you have this payment on top of paying the utility company, and it’s not that, ”said Mandy Rami of HomeLink Pros Solar. “It’s that what you’re paying now becomes less when you go solar… It’s cheaper than what you’re doing right now, no matter how you slice it.”

HomeLink Pros Solar Founder Mike Terry compared standard electricity to a 12-pack of soda at the grocery store, with solar acting as a 24-pack of the exact same soda, but with the same price tag.

“Here’s what everyone can agree on… You’re buying that 24-pack,” he said. “Why? Because when something is the same but costs less, people like that. It makes sense… If the utility company came to your house and said, ‘Hey, listen, we’d really like to lower your price of electricity. Can we do that?’ Nobody listening right now would say, ‘No, I like paying the higher prices.’”

Terry continued, “A lot of people have this idea that if there’s solar mixed into it, there’s got to be a catch. But what we’re really doing is lowering people’s price for electricity through the solar, and that’s all it really is.”

The Santa Clarita solar power experts are so confident that most homeowners will want to switch to solar once they understand how it works, they gave away brand new Amazon Echos to anyone who scheduled a no-obligation consultation after their appearance on KHTS Radio on May 30.

HomeLink Pros Solar staff are encouraging anyone interested in solar power to act now before harsh summer temperatures return, as the average homeowner with standard electricity pays half of their total costs for the year over the next three months because of the increase in air conditioning use.

“You will just lose money every day that you wait by paying your summer bills right now,” Rami said. “We’re getting solar installed in this area in about six weeks, so it’s super fast. We want to get people installed before your highest bills of the year.”

Santa Clarita Solar Energy Expert Discusses Upcoming Changes In Standard Electricity Rates

A Santa Clarita solar energy expert is talking about a major change coming to standard electricity rates, which is expected to charge residents based on the time of day they use their electricity.

Posted by:  KHTS Newsroom in  Santa Clarita Latest NewsSCV Your Home Inside And OutApril 16, 2019 – 12:43 pm 0 50 Views

“One of the things that we’re talking most about right now with homeowners is a change in the way Edison charges for electricity,” said Mike Terry, founder of HomeLink Solar. “It’s going to really impact people significantly where customers are going to be billed a different price for their electricity based on what time of day it is rather than just by how much they use.”

In the past, residents could make an effort to lower their electric bills by conserving the overall amount of energy that they use, but this new “time-of-use” rate structure changes things dramatically, according to Terry.

“Now everyone is going to be paying the highest rate available during the afternoons, especially during the summer when it’s hot up here in Santa Clarita,” he said. “The rate doubles at 4:00 during the summer.”

With the average resident spending 55 to 60 percent of what they pay for electricity annually during the summer months alone, Terry noted that the financial impacts of these upcoming rate plan changes are expected to be significant.

The solar energy experts at HomeLink Pros Solar can educate homeowners not only on the upcoming time-of-use plans expected to be rolled out by Edison in the near future and how these compare to using a Santa Clarita solar company as an alternative, but also on a variety of other things as well.

“We focus on the whole home, and a lot of times, what we do with a customer doesn’t involved them buying anything or signing up for anything,” Terry said. “We help them change their behaviors, we help them learn how things work.”

Save Water, Go With Solar Panels

Water is by far one of the most important resources we have on Earth, as we need it to live! Are you conscious of saving water? Do you implement practices in your day-to-day life that helps save water?

Well how about switching to solar? Yeah, you heard us right, and you heard it here: switching to solar can save water! Solar panels are usually known for their service in saving power, energy, and money, but these amazing panels also help save the environment!

Power plants take the credit for using almost half of the water consumption here in the U.S. The issue here is that many power plants use water for their power generation, but if these power plants switched to solar panels the only thing these power plants would need is the sun! Solar panels can be installed residentially or commercially, and they can be a great benefit to saving the Earth’s water supply. Being that water is not unlimited, and it is a resource that is in very high demand, we need to conserve as much as we possibly can, and solar panels can be of good help.

Now, you may know that is takes water to create solar panels. Yes, it is true, water is used for virtually everything, but solar panels use very small amounts of water, and the water that is used by solar panel manufacturing is recycled! Solar energy can also help purify our water. By switching to solar energy the power plants-as mentioned above-can purify large amounts of water faster than they could if they were using conventional power. Solar can also be used as away to free up residential and commercial space, so that owners and workers may refocus their efforts on saving other resources like water.

Solar panel companies are bigger than ever before, and with companies like HomeLink Pros around you’ll be able to switch to solar with the clear knowledge of the benefits to solar energy, and how installed solar panels are going to benefit, not only your home and your pocket, but the environment as well! Home link provides a number of services such as: home solar energy solutions that are customized to you, automation and security services, and natural gas services. So what do you say? Are you ready to make the solar switch today?
